Meditation Q&A

What is meditation?

Meditation is simply focusing your mind on something. In fact, reading an article on the computer is a form of meditation, as is driving in your car or listening to music.

Your mind is in a constant state of flux. Every millisecond of your life you are creating or reconstructing your reality through what you think about.  The stress in your life plays a huge factor in the way you perform at work and at home.

Meditation is not mystical, otherworldly or inaccessible.  It is not reserved for the ‘elite’ nor those steeped in knowledge of Eastern or alternative religions. Meditation is a very simplistic and practical approach and it’s available to everyone regardless of what your core beliefs are.

Millions of stressed out people have turned to Meditation practices to relax, reduce stress, ease anxiety and find inner peace. Meditation goes precisely to the source of anxiety by realizing the existing stresses that continue to trigger new tension.  It’s a solution that is centuries old with proven results.

How does mediation create sustainability?

Mediation recycles negative thoughts into positive thoughts while increasing energy to the mind and body. The process is very similar to net zero.  Sustainability meditation allows an individual to harvest more energy throughout the brain, which increases efficiencies in business, health, relationships and life style. Sustainability meditation increases the potential for long-term maintenance of well-being, which has a dramatic impact on your mind, relationships, environment, economic, and social dimensions.

Does meditation align with a religion or particular belief system?

No.  Meditation offers a simple way to create wellness on many fronts. Meditation can help reduce stress, emotional issues, relationship problems, and health issues. More importantly, it creates sustainability for the planet.

How does meditation work to help individuals and businesses achieve their goals?

Meditation works in a number of ways. For example it:

  • Reduces the costs of staff absenteeism caused by illness, injury, stress or long term illness
  • Improves cognitive function including increased concentration, memory, learning ability and creativity
  • Improves productivity and overall staff and business well-being
  • Reduces staff turnover and associated costs
  • Enhances employer/employee and client relationships
  • Reduces health insurance premiums for businesses
  • Is a visible and tangible Corporate Responsibility stance
  • Enhances employee job satisfaction

How do you customize the meditation for an individual verses a business?

We have worked with small and large companies and adapt and tailor our courses to meet the unique needs of each individual business or person. First we assess goals and objectives to maximum benefits, and then customize a course to fit in with the client’s logistical needs.

Tell us about the results you have witnessed in businesses that ask their employees to participate in meditations?

I’ve witnessed a precise clarity of mind; increased productivity, improved health and a laser focus on results. Individuals feel more empowered to create success in their relationships at work and at home from consistent meditation.

Many large companies like Google and Hughes Aircraft now offer meditation classes to employees as they too realize that mediation improves productivity, decreases and prevents stress, and reduces absenteeism.

Studies from the National Institutes of Health, University of Massachusetts and Mind/Body Medical Institute at Harvard show that meditation enhances the qualities that companiesneed most from their knowledge workers: increased brain-wave activity, enhanced intuition, better concentration and the alleviation of the kinds of aches and pains that plague employees most.

What are the biggest misconceptions people have about meditation?

Meditation is often perceived as a time-consuming, difficult task. Given the simplistic nature of meditation, a basic practice can start with just 5 minutes a day and actually works best when it’s tailored around your schedule. Once the meditation practice begins, you will discover that it’s your most precious time to de-stress and love yourself–quickly becoming a joy instead of a chore!

When did you begin to meditate and why?

I began to meditate when my identical twin died.  It was the most challenging thing I’d ever faced in my life.  I felt alone, depressed, and in a state of flux. Losing an identical twin is a unique and indescribable kind of pain. I literally felt that a part of me had died. Although many friends, family members, and coworkers tried to console me, I could not get over his death.

Overtime, I began to gain weight and stopped loving myself.  I was deeply depressed, angry and felt worthless.  Through the mourning process, I always remembered the inspirational words of my twin (Trevin/aka Drake Daniels), he had always recommended that I meditate.

After his passing, I went on a self-discovery journey to learn all I could about meditation and the brain. I began intensely studying under Jonathan Parker, Ph.D. to learn how the mind worked and the potential of the brain. In fact, I studied meditation and the mind as someone would naturally breathe air. It became my life. I spent countless hours in meditation on a daily basis and would generally devote my entire weekend to meditation.

Soon, my life began to regain a sense of normalcy. I started taking better care of myself and noticed that I was excelling at work in new ways. Meditation was the key to my newfound success at work and an invaluable tool in dealing with my grief. I have been meditating everyday now for more than 15 years.

Tell us about the transformation you have seen in your life as a result of your meditation practice.

After steady practice, I began to see measured results in my performance at work and relationships.  I started to demonstrate deeper feelings of compassion, love, and a desire to increase sustainability on the planet. I became motivated and involved in environmental issues and advocating for military veterans.

The most profound external changes though took place in my work performance–I had a noticeable increase in my sales at Sprint.  Meditation allowed me to retain complex technical product information and eliminate the amount of stress I had previously felt at work. I also had an increased desire to learn more about business leadership and the most elaborate international business challenges suddenly became ordinary.

The results meditation had on mind mastery were so powerful that I knew I had to share this knowledge with others and began teaching businesses and individuals about meditation. Investing in human potential is one of the most important issues of this day. To increase sustainability, it must start with the investment of human capital.
